Toni was born in Pittsburg, Texas and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Biology. She also earned a Medical Technology degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas. After working as a chemistry supervisor at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and as a laboratory manager at The University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, she and her husband, Curtis, returned to East Texas. They have two wonderful sons who are now married to two fabulous new daughters. Toni taught briefly at Northeast Texas Community College and now enjoys pursing her interest in art.
Toni took her first art class in 1996 at the age of 43. She says, “I’ve been surrounded by wonderfully creative people all of my life. My mom taught me about entertaining the eye with color and design in interiors. My dad is a writer, editor, publisher, and my brother is a playwright and artist. One of my grandmothers was a watercolor, oil, pastel and china painter, and my other grandmother created quilts, clothing and beautiful gardens. Why did I choose to study science? I loved it at the time, but, now, I choose art!”
Her favorite medium is watercolor. “Watercolor has such a freshness and spontaneity. It allows me to be bold with color and design, and I like to experiment with different techniques.” Her recent “cross series” paintings are done using a batiking technique with hot wax
.
Toni has studied art under Jo Taylor, Ken Hosmer, Kim Wommack, Beverly Boren and Sandra St. John. She continues to learn from her watercolor group of friends and mentors who paint together on a regular basis: Judy Barry, Frankie Brown, Deborah Carr, Peggy Crosby, Donna Hodge, Nancy Rhodes, Sandra Spann, Sandra St. John and Lynn Williams. She is a member of The Southwestern Watercolor Society and the Mt. Pleasant Art Society. Her paintings can be seen at The Frame Up and Fine Arts Gallery in Mt. Vernon and at her home studio in Mt. Pleasant.
